KIT was a guest at IGNM Bern and produced a very special concert situation called FAKE ORIGINS. Talking about origins, identity, knowing what makes us, that is a minefield - especially in these difficult times, when trends oscillate between the two extremes of nationalism and globalization. Musicians are under the pressure of unification in their self-perception, driven by a global economy and its lobbies that allow the new - cosmopolitan - technologies to intervene and change their lives. This affects health as well as food, communication and travel. In the face of the perceived "imperial" power of the economy, artists find strategies to convey the traditional flavors of their local culture without being conservative: they do not compress their microtones, dialects or songs/instruments, they do not flatten their melody into a commercial rondo structure, but they present it in its authentic complexity. Nevertheless, they use the contemporary tools of their generation - especially technical tools to extend their instruments - and connect to mass culture by appropriating its codes in a transformed way. This aims to bring them out of isolation without creating distance from their cultural origins. Kollektiv Totem offers a program in which the five composers Jennifer Walshe, Mauro Lanza, Jannik Giger, Charles Quevillon and Léo Collin have tried to define their paradox of being citizens of the world and witnesses of their own (false) culture.
